The Smokestack

Project Thumbnail

The Smokestack is a representation of a haiku poem through motion graphics, typographic expression, and sound. With so few words and its deceptive simplicity, deciding the visual pacing of this haiku in 30 seconds was the biggest challenge.

My goal through this short video was to emphasize the tension between the idea of the natural occurrence of puddles and the man-made smokestack, which serves a broader metaphor for the destruction humanity has caused to the planet. The limited color palette, stop-motion texture, and the moving noise applied to the typography were chosen to visually depict the sense of dread beyond how this poem communicates it through word alone.
